Method for lubricating an unsealed boring bit
Patent

OSTI ID:6891101
A method and apparatus are described for air drilling. Water and a slight amount of certain organic additives are admixed with the air which is circulated down the drill stem, through the bit and up the annulus. Water-soluble polyalkylene glycols and a synthetic sperm oil exhibit highly desirable properties for use as the organic additives. The apparatus for practice of the invention consists of a conventional air drilling rig. The gas discharged up the annulus in the well bore carries the rock cuttings, aided by the mist created by the water and organic additives, while the passage of the mixture down the drill stem and through the passages of the bit lubricates its bearing surfaces. Means are provided for controlling the flow of additive to the air stream. (10 claims)
