An understanding of the basic ideas of quantum mechanics and of some theoretical principles, derived from quantum mechanics are presented, although a detailed rigorous mathematical treatment is not given. Electrons in atoms and molecules, the wave equation, the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation, the variational method and the harmonic oscillator, three-dimensional problems, hydrogenlike atoms, identical particles, atomic structure, the hydrogen molecule, valence bond theory, molecular orbital theory, symmetry, and time dependence are treated.
