Backfit of advanced technology to improve plant operability and maneuverability

Expanding nuclear regulatory requirements have had the effect of reducing plant operability. This has had a negative impact on the ability of nuclear units to proactively respond to increased maneuvering requirements that accompany the increasing proportion of nuclear generation in the US. These regulations also place additional burdens on the operator. There are a variety of active programs in place to address the issue of improved operability and maneuverability. This paper discusses some backfit applications of advanced technology in the area of core monitoring and control for pressurized water reactors (PWRs). These have significantly increased the ability of the PWR to respond to grid transients while reducing the duties of the operating staff during such maneuvers.
