Unocal milestone: first billing made on price guarantee

Unocal Corporation shipped 80,400 barrels of shale oil from the Parachute Creek plant in January 1987. It first began shipping synthetic crude oil on December 23, 1986. Under Unocal's agreement with the federal government, the government pays Unocal the difference between the current market price for a barrel of crude and a base price currently set at about $44 per barrel. The differential payment for the January shipment came to approximately $2.7 million.
