A series of studies to evaluate potential improvements in Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation's (NMPC's) Huntley units 65/66 plant control system configuration and to quantify the value of these improvements is described. A dynamic simulation model of the plant is used as a test bed to explore alternative traditional and advanced control schemes. A set of cost functions'' is described and incorporated into simulation models to provide objective comparison of alternative control techniques. Constant pressure operating modes and sliding pressure operating modes, are evaluated. The study focuses on two advanced control schemes: gain scheduling, a form of adaptive control, and model reference feed forward, in which a portion of the simulation model is embedded into a modern distributed control system (DCS). When combined, these techniques offer extremely precise control, minimized life expenditure, and improved maneuvering ability of the plant. Guidelines for installation of the advanced control algorithms on a DCS are presented. 14 refs., 36 figs., 3 tabs.
