A step-by-step procedure for designing an activated sludge system for wastewater treatment based on previous principles is described and illustrated with a numerical example involving a 1.5 million gal/day plant with an influent BOD (five-day test) of 1200 mg/l. and effluent BOD (five-day test) of 40 mg/l.
