The oxygen isotope record of Neogene sediments provides a new form of chemical stratigraphy for making stratigraphic correlations with resolutions of 10,000 to 20,000 years in the late Pleistocene, 40,000 to 50,000 years in the early Pleistocene, and 100,000 years in the Pliocene-Miocene. These correlations are possible because the isotopic changes in the oceans are driven by glacial-interglacial climatic changes in sea level and polar ice volumes. Using delta/sup 18/O stratigraphy, they can enhance the correlation of Gulf Coast continental margin sequences and relate seismic, lithologic, and sedimentologic changes to glacio-eustatic sea level fluctuations and paleoclimatic changes.
