Shutoff fitting for plastic systems puts positive squeeze on gas flow

Du Pont Co. recently introduced its new Aldyl A shutoff fitting for positive sealing of plastic pipe systems. The new fitting is a polyethylene device that can be socket-fused directly to a 2-in. PE distribution line. The fitting costs less than a metal valve, requires no cathodic protection, and eliminates gaskets and seals. Its design takes advantage of PE's proven squeeze-off properties. The pressure-carrying component is an oval cross section within the metal compression channel with a wall thickness equal to that of a regular 2-in. SDR 11 pipe. Teardrop inserts of Du Pont Teflon TFE fluorocarbon resin provide anchoring for the radius clamps used to secure the pipe in the mechanical compression chamber. The fitting, operated by a T-bar wrench with a 2-in. square socket, can shut off a line completely from -20 to 100/sup 0/F at pressures up to 90 psig.
