Coarsening kinetics of the tetragonal phase in a manganesia-partially-stabilized zirconia

The coarsening kinetics of the tetragonal phase in a magnesia-partially-stabilized zirconia at 1420{degrees}C was examined using transmission electron microscopy and found to be controlled by volume diffusion. The rate constant was larger and the particle-size distribution was broader than predicted by the Lifshitz--Slyozov--Wagner theory of particle coarsening. A volume fraction modified coarsening theory was found which better fits the experimental rate constant and particle-size distribution.
