To increase its capacity to receive gas from Alberta's Deep basin, Canada's Nova Corp. is looping the northern portion of its Edson gas-transmission line with 100 miles of 42-in-diam pipe. The looping ,peration is part of the Alaska Highway Gas Pipeline Project. Nova's experience with automatic welding over the past 10 years showed that most difficulties and delays can be avoided or mitigated by acquainting the welders, inspectors, and technicians with the equipment and procedures well bore construction begins. Therefore, Nova held a 10-day demonstration program to qualify the welders on all phases of the CRC automatic-welding equipment to be used. This excellent preparatory work contributed significantly to the consistency of the pipe gang's performance.
