Fundamental and harmonic susceptibilities of YBa sub 2 Cu sub 3 O sub 7 minus. delta

We have examined the complex harmonic magnetic susceptibilities {chi}{sub {ital n}}={chi}{sub {ital n}}{sup {prime}}{minus}{ital i}{chi}{sub {ital n}}{sup {prime}{prime}} ({ital n}=1,2,3,...,10) of the sintered high-critical-temperature (high-{ital T}{sub {ital c}}) superconductor YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}}. The experimental variables for the measurements of {chi}{sub {ital n}} were the sample temperature {ital T} (10{le}{ital T}{le}110 K), the ac magnetic field amplitude {ital H}{sub ac} (1.4 {mu}T{le}{mu}{sub 0}{ital H}{sub ac}{le}8.5 mT), frequency {ital f} (7.3{le}{ital f}{le}1460 Hz), and the magnitude of a superimposed dc field {ital H}{sub dc} ({vert bar}{mu}{sub 0}{ital H}{sub dc}{vert bar}{le}8.5 mT). As functions of temperature, {chi}{sub 1}{sup {prime}} and {chi}{sub 1}{sup {prime}{prime}} depend on both {ital H}{sub ac} and {ital H}{sub dc}. In particular, the {chi}{sub 1}{sup {prime}} transition curve can shift to {ital higher} temperatures with increasing {ital H}{sub dc}. Odd-harmonic susceptibilities were measured as functions of temperature below {ital T}{sub {ital c}} for zero {ital H}{sub dc}; both even and odd harmonics were observed for nonzero {ital H}{sub dc}. At fixed temperature, the odd-harmonic susceptibilities are even functions of {ital H}{sub dc}, while the even-harmonic susceptibilities are odd functions of {ital H}{sub dc}. We compared the experimental intergrain {ital coupling} characteristics of {chi}{sub {ital n}}{sup {prime}} and {chi}{sub {ital n}}{sup {prime}{prime}} with theoretical susceptibility curves based on magnetization equations derived by Ji {ital et} {ital al}. from a simplified Kim model for critical current density.
