This article describes the requirements of the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act (RPA) and provides an overview of two publications in response to the RPA: the Assessment Supplement and the 1985 RPA Program Draft Environmental Impact Statement. The first part of this article describes the RPA and its place in the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service and other national planning efforts. The second part provides an insight into the 1985 RPA Program through description of the process, goals, and program alternatives that will guide development of this program. 14 references.
