In order to identify potential problem areas related to the use of conventional natural gas distribution equipment for hydrogen service, the Institute of Gas Technology is conducting experiments on test loops representing residential-commercial and industrial distribution systems. After obtaining baseline data on natural gas operation, researchers will measure flow rates, energy delivery, and leakage rates for hydrogen, noting problems in materials compatibility. A small safety test model will provide a means of defining problems associated with mechanical or corrosion leaks, leak clamps, and ruptures.
