The thermal (pH 6.5) and light-induced (pH 2) reduction of (+)-Ru(bpy)/sub 3//sup 3 +/ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) in aqueous solution proceeds with complete retention of optical activity. The present results, together with previous data on the stoichiometry and kinetics of these reactions, lend strong support to Creutz and Sutin's postulate of pseudobase structure for the hydroxyl ion containing Ru(III) intermediate. 19 references, 1 table.
