Synthesis of LiTiPO[sub 5] and LiTiAsO[sub 5] with the [alpha]-Fe[sub 2]PO[sub 5] structure

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (United States)
The new phases LiTiPO[sub 5] and LiTiAsO[sub 5] have been synthesized by solid state reaction. They are essentially isostructural with [alpha]-Fe[sub 2]PO[sub 5], as confirmed by X-ray Rietveld refinement. The structures are built of chains of edge-sharing LiO[sub 6] octahedra cross-linked by chains of alternate corner-sharing PO[sub 4] tetrahedra and TiO[sub 6] octahedra (each of which shares common faces with two LiO[sub 6] octahedra). Unit cell dimensions: LiTiPO[sub 5], a = 7.4000(5) [angstrom], b = 6.3752(3) [angstrom], c = 7.2347(4) [angstrom]; LiTiAsO[sub 5], a = 7.5257(5) [angstrom], b = 6.5786(4) [angstrom], c = 7.4524(5) [angstrom]. Space group: Pnma. The phases melt incongruently at [approximately]1080[degrees]C and exhibit very low electrical conductivities, (5-10) [times] 10[sup [minus]6] S cm[sup [minus]1] at 400[degrees]C with activation energy [approximately]1 eV. Subsolidus phase diagrams for the systems Li[sub 2]O-TiO[sub 2]-P[sub 2]O[sub 5]/As[sub 2]O[sub 5] are presented.
