Title: Status of commercially important bivalves near the proposed Church Creek Power Plant site. Special report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6882130

This report is an assessment of the status of commercially important bivalve molluscs near the proposed Church Creek Power Plant intake/discharge site. Data on the soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) and the oyster (Crassostrea virginica) were obtained from surveys using a commercial clam dredge, a diver-operated suction sampler, visual reconnaissance, and records. Young soft-shell clams were virtually absent, and other infaunal bivalves were present at relatively low abundance. The maximum density of marketable soft-shell clams was 16 bushels per acre, too low for commercial exploitation. Adult soft-shell clams were apparently less abundant in deeper water. This reduces the likelihood that commercial densities of soft-shell clams or oysters will occur naturally at this location in the future.
