Tongonan I: a significant step for the Philippines

In an effort to reduce oil imports for electric power generation, the Philippine government is implementing extensive programs of geothermal exploration and development. The development and exploration of the Tongonan geothermal field is discussed. Major emphasis is on Tongonan I, the first large-scale power generating plant in Leyte. Tongonan I is designed to handle a fluctuating load - consisting of domestic demand plus a major demand of a copper smelter and fertilizer plant. The turbines, condensers, cooling towers and steam lines are described.
