Synthesis and characterization of oxide interstitial derivatives of zirconium monochloride and monobromide

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6877544

An investigation into the reactivity of ZrX (X = Br,Cl) found no evidence for successful intercalation of ZrCl between the chloride layers with NH/sub 3/, pyridine, CO, n-butyl lithium, Li/NH/sub 3/, K/NH/sub 3/, and Li; and Zr plus LiCl, CsCl, and NaCl. Reactions of ZrX + n ZrO/sub 2/ at 850 to 1000/sup 0/ for two weeks produced an expanded ZrX structure (ZrX(O/sub y)) and the metal phase Zr(O/sub x/)(X/sub p/) (p congruent to 0). Three ZrCl(O/sub y/) crystal structures were refined.
