Accuracy of describing the equilibrium shapes of a rotating nucleus by an ellipsoid

Exact equilibrium shapes of a rotating, axially symmetric nucleus are obtained in the nuclear liquid drop model with a sharp nuclear surface. The critical angular-momentum values at which these shapes lose stability are found. The results of the calculation allow one to determine the accuracy of the ellipsoidal approximation, which is usually employed in the description of the rotating nucleus.
