Metropolitan Edison may default April 15

Metropolitan Edison Company (Met Ed), owner of Three Mile Island (TMI), may default on its April 15 taxes because the Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission not only refused to let the utility pass cleanup costs on to ratepayers, but denied emergency rate relief. The continued shutdown of TMI-1 and 2 reactors has limited Met Ed's cash flow so much that the utility could go bankrupt before cleanup funds are exhausted. Most of the cash flow problem is due to the large quantities of higher-priced replacement power that must be purchased. Met Ed is optimistic about restarting TMI-1 in spite of the public and regulatory opposition. (DCK)
