This patent describes an internal combustion engine with cylinders, an ignition distributor including a distributor cap, a rotor, spark plug electrodes, a coil electrode, a shaft, a bowl shaped housing, a switch plate assembly with mating pockets, an interrupter and a rotor electrode. A spark shield is described which consists of: a circular shaped membrane of a generally domed shape; radial stiffening ribs projecting from the outer circumferential edge of the circular membrane; the membrane having an opening at its center into which the radial stiffening ribs terminate; and mating means located on the outer circumferential edge of the circular membrane for communication with the switch plate assembly.
