The preservation of stone

Novel chemical treatments are described which will retard the erosion of stone structures caused by weathering. In urban atmospheres rich in sulfur, nitrous oxides and carbon dioxide, stone decays quite rapidly. Consolidation of stone is accomplished by three methods: 1) replacement of the calcium of calcite or gypsum with barium; 2) precipitation of chemically resistant materials in the pore spaces of the stone; and 3) treatment with organic monomers and prepolymers. After such a substance has been introduced into the stone it is made to polymerize by means of a curing agent in the solution. On polymerization it recements the dislodged grains of the weathered stone. (JMT)
