An investigation was made of the effect of Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ in solid solution in ZrO/sub 2/ on the phases that are formed when ZrO/sub 2/ is reacted with either N/sub 2/ or Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/. The results suggest that the Zr--oxynitride phase can be precluded as a reaction product when the Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ content of the ZrO/sub 2/ is greater than or equal to 4 mol %. Dense Si/sub 3/N/sub 4//ZrO/sub 2/(+Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/) composites were fabricated, which did not degrade during oxidation at temperatures less than or equal to 1000 /sup 0/C. Severe degradation was observed for composites containing the Zr--oxynitride phase. The fracture toughness of the Si/sub 3/N/sub 4//ZrO/sub 2/(+Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/) composites increased with ZrO/sub 2/ content.
