Synthesis and structures of Cs/sub 2/TaSe/sub 4/ and Cs/sub 3/NbSe/sub 4/

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)
A study of the alkali metal tetraselenometalate system has afforded two new isostructural phases, Cs/sub 3/TaSe/sub 4/ and Cs/sub 3/NbSe/sub 4/. The structures of these phases have been determined by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques. Cs/sub 3/TaSe/sub 4/ crystallizes in the orthorhombic system (D/sub 2h//sup 16/-Pnma, a = 10.277(1), b = 11.918(1), c = 10.238(1) A) with four formula unites in the cell. The structure contains discrete TaSe/sub 4//sup 3 -/ ions (Ta-Se, 2.369(4), 2.374(7), 2.397(6) A) and Cs/sup +/ cations. Out to 4 A the Cs cations are surrounded by five or seven Se atoms.
