Atomic absorption determination of zirconium and hafnium in organic solutions
This paper studies the nature of the effect of various factors on the atomic absorption determination of zirconium and hafnium in organic solutions and the selection of the optimum conditions for conducting an analysis. Saturated hydrocarbons in the methane series (pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, decane, and dodecane) were used with the saturated alcohols C/sub 2/H/sub 5/OH, C/sub 3/H/sub 7/OH, C/sub 4/H/sub 9/OH, C/sub 5/H/sub 14/OH, C/sub 7/H/sub 15/OH. The other solvent were CCL/sub 4/, benzene, toluene, and trioctylamine. All the substances were of analytically pure grade. It is shown that the use of propanol or butanol as solvent, as well as measuring of atomic absorption of zirconium and hafnium at a flowrate of 240 liter/h of acetylene and 340 liter/h of nitrogen (I) oxide enables the sensitivity of the method to be raised to 3.5 and 7.5 ug/ml for 1% absorption for zirconium and hafnium respectively. Conducting an analysis under the conditions found enabled the destabilization of the flame to be avoided.
