Enrichment of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu in the surface microlayer of Lakes Michigan, Ontario, and Mendota

Measurements of surface film pressure in areas of Lakes Michigan, Ontario, and Mendota with capillary wave damping ranged from < 2 to > 22 dyn.cm/sup -1/, but were typically 2 to 10. Screen-collected surface microlayer samples generally contained higher concentrations of Zn, Cd, Cu, and especially Pb, than samples from 30-cm depth at the same site. Areas with a film pressure > 1 dyn.cm/sup -1/ showed greater surface enrichments of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu than areas with no apparent surface-accumulated material. Variations in surface enrichment between individual samples suggest that local conditions are important in controlling surface enrichment, but some similarities between metals and sites were apparent. Foam samples collected on Lake Michigan also contained higher concentrations of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu than the bulk water.
