ZnSe thermochemical cycle for hydrogen production: chemical and process design studies

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6869212
Problems encountered and resolved during initial stages of the development of the ZnSe thermochemical cycle and current results on chemical research and process design studies are described. The recent chemical studies include work on the steam hydrolysis of ZnCl/sub 2/(l) at 780 to 980/sup 0/K to produce ZnO(s) and HCl(g), and on the mechanism of decomposition of H/sub 2/Se(g) at 673 to 748/sup 0/K. Process design and cost analyses for the cycle give a conservative cost estimate of approximately $13/GJ for hydrogen production. We anticipate that as work on this cycle progresses, chemical and process-design innovations will lower production costs.
