Aqueous solutions of glycine and L-alanine were ..gamma.. irradiated in the presence of a spin trap, 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane. Stable spin adducts produced in the ..gamma..-irradiated solutions were analyzed by means of high-performance liquid chromatography and ESR spectroscopy. The following four spin adducts were found and identified: t-BuN(O.)CH/sub 2/COO/sup -/(I) and t-BuN(O.)CH(NH/sub 2/)COO/sup -/(II) from glycine; t-BuN(O.)CH(CH/sub 3/)COO/sup -/(III) and t-BuN(O.)CH/sub 2/CH(NH/sub 3//sup +/)COO/sup -/(IV) from L-alanine. It was found that the ESR spectra of these spin adducts changed with pH through the acid dissociation equilibria of the carboxyl or amino groups. The pK/sub a/ values for the dissociation have been determined to be 3.2 for the carboxyl group of spin adduct III, and 8.9 for the amino group of IV.
