Situation of nuclear energy in the Federal Republic of Germany (in German)

The third reassessment of the energy programme of the Federal Republic of Germany plans as an optimistic forecast the extension of the NPP-capacity from the present 10 GW to close to 40 GW in the year 2000. Even with this capacity meeting the necessary extension only to a insufficient extent the three planned FRP in Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse would not be enough to reprocess the total amount of fuel elements, especially as the accumulated stock of fuel elements from the operated nuclear power plants has to be reprocessed in addition. Therefore the original conception of a plant with 1,400 t/a remains the only convenient one under mathematical and economic aspects. Due to the muddled political situation it has now become inevitable to build small plants the sites of which are still not assured in any federal state, not even in the states governed by the CDU. The considerable additional costs will in the end be paid by the energy consumers. According to careful estimates these additional costs could easily be used to finance two or three NPP.
