Narrowing the field in coal liquefaction

The Advanced Coal Liquefaction R and D Facility in Wilsonville, Alabama is the largest plant still dedicated to liquefaction research. The two-stage liquefaction (TSL) process developed there remains a strong candidate for scale-up when oil economies again shift. TSL is a step beyond H-Coal and Exxon donor Solvent (EDS) processes, which have already had large-scale demonstration. The authors give an overview of the TSL process, including results of combustion and handling tests. Future research will focus on the finding a better catalysts. 4 references, 3 figures.
