Catalyst and the use thereof for the production of gas containing methane

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6867951

A new catalyst developed by West Germany's BASF AG permits the adiabatic reaction involved in steam cracking of hydrocarbons (boiling point of 86 to 572/sup 0/F) to a methane-rich gas to be carried out at much lower temperatures. The compound Ni/sub 5/MgAl/sub 2/(OH)/sub 16/.CO.4H/sub 2/O, produced from aqueous solution, is converted into the catalyst by drying at temperatures of 176 to 356/sup 0/F, calcination at 662 to 1022/sup 0/F, and reduction in a stream of hydrogen. The rise in temperature from the drying stage to the calcination stage is carried out with a gradient of 3 to 6/sup 0/F/min.
