Title: Electronic assignments of the violet bands of sodium

Journal Article · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1063/1.35889· OSTI ID:6867843

The puzzling violet bands of sodium (425--460 nm), known since 1932/sup 1/, have been shown conclusively to arise from the superposition of two distinct continuum emission bands: one singlet (2/sup 1/..sigma../sup +//sub u/X/sup 1/..sigma../sup +//sub g/) and one triplet (primarily 2/sup 3/Pi/sub g/-1/sup 3/..sigma../sup +//sub u/). Each continuum emission system resulting from bound-free transitions shows complex interference structure (arising from multiple branches of the corresponding Mulliken difference potential (MDP))/sup 2/.
