Nuclear capital cost escalation

Journal Article · · Energy Policy; (United States)
Dr. K.R. Shaw argued in the December 1979 issue of Energy Policy, that nuclear power was likely to become uncompetitive with coal if cost-escalation trends continued. He cited cost escalation in the West German nuclear program as evidence. Professor U. Hansen disputes that nuclar power is likely to be more expensive than coal in the German case, and demonstrates that lifetime levelized operating costs for nuclear plants will be lower. A reply from Dr. Shaw points out that capital costs for nuclear reactors are understated and that the United Kingdom's position is not applicable to Germany. 2 figures, 1 table.
