In-situ fireflood process encouraging for Gulf

One of the enhanced recovery techniques employed by Gulf Oil in the Permian basin is the in-situ fireflood. However, finding a reservoir with acceptable rock and fluid properties, and then building a successful fireflood can be diffciult. The company recently drilled an observation well behind the burn front in their Section 10 combustion project in the North Ward-Estes field in Ward County. The core from this well indicates that 28 ft of the J-2 sand, Yates formation, had been cleanly burned and showed no oil or water saturation. The core from the original observation well is being analyzed for clay alteration by Gulf's research center. From this analysis an estimate of the peak burn temperature will be made. This imformation then will be used in a heat wave simulator to predict the present location of the burn front.
