The UOP Inc.'s Process Division and Ashland Petroleum Co.'s joint development program for residual oil conversion without prior hydrotreating, which is currently being studied at a 200 bbl/day pilot unit at Ashland's Catlettsburg, Ky., refinery is based on fluid catalytic cracking but incorporates some distinctly different approaches. The process goals include control of carbon residues, coke production, metal contamination, and environmental aspects. The pilot facility has processed several different atmospheric residues, including a Murban residue containing 1.53Vertical Bar3< sulfur, 0.11Vertical Bar3< nitrogen, and 2.5, 2.5, and 9.0 ppm nickel, vanadium, and sodium, respectively, and a Light Arabian residue containing 2.58Vertical Bar3< sulfur, 0.16Vertical Bar3< nitrogen, and 7.0, 20.0, and 6.2 ppm nickel, vanadium, and sodium, respectively. Typical yield patterns were 78.1Vertical Bar3< by vol, conversion, 56.9Vertical Bar3< C/sub 5/+ gasoline, and 21.9Vertical Bar3< cycle oil for the Murban residue, and 75.6Vertical Bar3< conversion, 49.8Vertical Bar3< C/sub 5/+ gasoline, and 24.4Vertical Bar3< cycle oils for the Light Arabian residue. The gasoline octanes obtained were 91 and 78 Research and Motor octanes, clear, for the Murban residuum and 93.2 and 80.0, respectively, for the Light Arabian residuum.
