The simultaneous action of wear and corrosion may result in accelerated material losses due to their synergistic effect. Wear-corrosion is a complex phenomenon involving the interplay of a number of electrochemo-mechanical parameters. The author discusses how inhibition of corrosion processes can be attained by the formation on metal surfaces of either thin adsorption layers or phase layers developing a passive state. Proper selection of inhibitors possesses the potential of preventing or decelerating the corrosion action and consequently improving a material's wear-corrosion behavior.
