1987 NRC budget: labs bear the brunt

The 1987 budget for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of $405 million is $26 million less than the 1986 budget. Most of the cut will be in contractual support of regulatory research conducted at the national laboratories. Although the Gramm-Rudman-Hollins Act requires a 4.3% reduction of NRC funding of the 1986 budget, the agency has until March 1 to make its allocations. Most of the cuts will be for casework on reactors awaiting licensing. Since there are no new applications, work in this area is diminishing. Other cuts will be in the integrated Safety Assessment Program. The 1987 budget does not include advanced-reactor concepts. 1 table.
