Effect of zirconium incorporation into YBCO superconductor

The substitution of Y by Zr in the YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-[delta]] has been investigated. A structural study has been performed in samples with nominal composition Y[sub 1-x]Zr[sub x]Ba[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-[delta]] following different preparation procedures by means of X-ray powder diffraction and Zr K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy. This work demonstrates that Zr does not replace Y in the YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-[delta]] structure, and a multiphase system is obtained. Magnetic and electrical measurements performed over these samples are in agreement with this structural description.
