Electron motion in free-electron lasers

We have carried out an analysis of electron motion in a free-electron laser using relativistic quantum mechanics, and have found rigorous analytic solutions for the Klein-Gordon equation in a helical magnetic pump field. Our results show that the free-electron laser's gain saturation originates from the appearance of de-bunching of the beam as well as higher-order bunching.
