Origin of the rotation of elliptical galaxies

Elliptical galaxies in compact Coma-type clusters may have been put into rotation by two mechanisms. First, mutual encounters during the protogalaxy stage could have generated angular momentum by tidal interaction. Second, the primordial ''pancakes'' could have acquired angular momentum by mutual encounter; upon breaking up, a parent pancake would convey to a detaching protogalaxy an angular rotational velocity comparable with its own. Either process would impart to E galaxies a specific angular momentum of the same order as observed.
