Wood-waste fuel boosts energy, aids environment

Wood wastes from area lumber mills have been used by the Eugene, Ore. Water and Electric Board as a primary fuel for generating steam and electricity and to reduce solid wastes and air pollution since 1940. Because wood wastes are undesirable for landfills and must be incinerated, the area has avoided extensive pollution problems with utility and industry-owned wood-waste fuel plants. Hogged wood-wastes consist of 80 percent bark and 20 percent wood residual. Water represents 40 percent by weight. The Eugene steam plant burned over one million cubic yards of wood wastes in the first half of 1977 to produce steam at 81 cents per thousand pounds and electrical power at 9.75 mills per kilowatt hour.
