The $600 million Grand Maison hydroelectric project being constructed in the French Alps is described. The 525 ft. high, 1800 ft. long embankment will impound a 112,600-acre ft. reservoir in the mountains east of Lyon. Construction problems are discussed; construction costs are running 35% over budget. Despite construction problems and high costs, it is expected that the main dam will be completed in the fall of 1984.
