Gear synchronizer for power transmission

This patent describes a synchronizer assembly comprising a gear member rotatable on a transmission shaft, an externally splined spline piece, with a conical portion formed at one side thereof, mounted on a hub portion of the gear member for rotating therewith. An externally splined synchronizer ring is mounted on the conical portion of the spline piece for frictional engagement therewith and an externally splined hub member is mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith. A clutch sleeve encircles the hub member and has an internally splined portion in continual engagement with the external splines of the hub member and axially shiftable toward and away from the spline piece to be engaged with the external splines of the synchronizer ring and the spline piece. Circumferentially spaced strut keys are assembled with the inner circumference of the clutch sleeve and are loaded radially outwardly into engagement with the clutch sleeve to abut against and urge the synchronizer ring toward the spline piece in shifting operation of the clutch sleeve. The improvement described here is wherein the externally splined portion of the synchronizer ring is formed smaller in diameter than the externally splined portion of the spline piece, and wherein the internally splined portion of the clutch sleeve includes a first set of internal splines engageable with the external splines of the synchronizer ring and a second set of internal splines engageable with the external splines of the spline piece. The first set of internal splines is formed smaller in axial length and larger in radial length than the second set of internal splines and is arranged to be brought into engagement with an end surface of the spline piece in shifting operation of the clutch sleeve toward the spline piece.
