Potential-determining reactions during pitting corrosion of aluminum

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6859131
Scanning measurements of the potential field over surfaces of aluminum, pitting in dilute chlorine solution, has shown that anodic currents are observed over pits and the cathodic reactions within the pits do not contribute significantly to the dissolution rates. The role of nitrate ions, added during pitting, led to increased potentials by reducing the dissolution rates within the pits, rather than increasing cathodic rates within or external to the pit. Potential decreases after a long period of exposure resulted from increased anodic rates rather than inhibited cathodic sites.
