Energy savings obtained in air conditioning in commercial buildingss are obtained through the use of low-energy chillers in new installations and retrofitting the existing ones. On top of the improvements in chillers' efficiency accomplished through mechanical improvements such as increased heat transfer surfaces, advances in heat exchanger technology and other measures adopted in the 1970s, variable speed control of a fixed-speed centrifugal chiller and automatic monitoring service are considered as major contributing factors to energy savings.
