EPR insulation pays off in long run

Journal Article · · Public Power; (United States)

Data showing the failure record of underground cables, both high-molecular-weight and cross-linked polyethylene, has raised interest in ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) insulation that has shown a longer service (40 years compared to 7-13). Further advantages of EPR are its heat resistance and higher thermal conductivity, its resistance to the corona effect, and its resistance to treeing. Despite its higher front-end cost, EPR is less expensive over its service life. 5 figures.
