Evaluation of the wake effects on plume dispersion using video image analysis

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6856482
Video images of smoke flow in the wake of a model building which were collected in previous wind-tunnel studies conducted by EPA at its Fluid Modeling Facility were further analyzed. Three distinct research projects were conducted. The first project evaluated existing image analysis/processing techniques to determine the contents of the data, develop a scheme for separating the smoke from the background, and ultimately determine the potential for analyzing the motion characteristics of the smoke flow. The second project used the theory of fractals to extract information from the smoke images. Results from these two projects identified a number of difficulties in trying to characterize smoke images. In the third project, a new technique for video imaging using laser sheet lighting was developed and tested. The resulting smoke images were observed to be more distinct and the noise levels were lower.
