Celluloses IV/sub I/ and IV/sub II/: are they the same structure

The X-ray diffraction diagrams of cellulose polymorphs IV/sub I/ IV/sub II/ appear identical, suggesting that the two polymorphs possess the same crystal structure. However, upon heterogeneous acetylation, cellulose IV/sub I/ produces the crystalline form of cellulose triacetate I (CTA I), whereas cellulose IV/sub II/ produces cellulose triacetate II (CTA II). It is known that CTA I is a parallel-chain structure while CTA II is antiparallel. Upon deacetylation, CTA I reverts to cellulose I and CTA II reverts to cellulose II. These results indicate that the crystal structures of celluloses IV/sub I/ and IV/sub II/ also differ in chain polarity. Crystallographic refinement of the two crystal structures shows that they are similar, despite the difference in chain polarity. The similarity arises from identical sheet structures, and the differences are due to the packing of the sheets with different polarities. 11 references, 3 figures, 1 table.
