Process for recovering hydrocarbons from an underground formation

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6856304
In certain locations there is an insufficient amount of gas available for gas injection. This is a method to improve the primary and/or secondary recovery of petroleum from subsurface formations by injecting a manufactured gas into the formation. The gas manufacturing process consists of subjecting a mixture of petroleum and hydrogen to hydroconversion at an elevated temperature and pressure to form a hydroconversion effluent of normally gaseous and normally liquid hydrocarbons. The stream is separated and the normally gaseous hydrocarbons are injected. A portion of the normally liquid hydrocarbons is subjected to partial combustion under conditions to form a hydrogen-carbon monoxide combustion effluent. This effluent is shift-converted to form a shift-conversion effluent of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is separated as a second product stream for injection.
