Steam reaction with char is the rate-limiting step gasification. The properties of the char are crucially dependent on the reactions during char formation. Pressurized pyrolysis makes it possible to influence the time/temperature history of the char as well as the gas environment. This investigation indicates that the pyrolysis of peat proceeds in two steps: an initial fast tar-producing step, followed by a second slower step including some chemical rearrangement of the char. A further observation is that a second contact between tar and char reduces the rate of the steam-char reaction. The tar probably encapsulates the ash, thus inhibiting the catalytic effect of the ash.
